Set on an established rural-residential section in Clarkville, north of Christchurch, this extensive renovation transforms an existing family home into a cohesive, contemporary residence that works harder for its occupants. Rather than building new, the project embraces what exists while fundamentally reimagining how the home functions, flows, and feels.

 

The design reorganises the floorplan around a clear residential logic: a dedicated children's wing to one side of the entry, an adults' retreat to the other. The existing front rumpus room is converted into a generous master suite, complete with en-suite and walk-in robe, reoriented to draw views across landscaped garden spaces. The kitchen and dining areas are repositioned at the heart of the home, opening simultaneously to both front and rear gardens — a deliberate move to dissolve the boundary between indoor and outdoor living. A kids' rumpus, study, separate powder room, and dedicated laundry complete a well-considered programme that brings genuine functionality to a family household.

 

Externally, the brief calls for a clear modernisation — the removal of dated feature arches, modification of tapered wing walls, new cladding, and a full re-roof to replace the existing built-in gutter system. Sun trajectory and eave overhangs are carefully considered to manage thermal gain without sacrificing natural light. The result is a home that reads as thoroughly contemporary while retaining the spatial generosity of its suburban footprint.
