ST COLUMBA'S

This upcoming project will see the original St Columba’s Church carefully transformed into a unique three-bedroom family home. Still in the pre-construction phase, the design takes a respectful approach — keeping the church’s character and form largely intact while introducing new elements that suit modern living.

The main interior space, with its high ceilings and open layout, will remain the heart of the home. A new entry point will be created using the existing lean-to at the front, giving the building a defined and welcoming arrival.

The kitchen will run along the outer side wall, looking across the main living area and out through new openings toward the neighbouring church hall. These new openings lead to a sheltered central courtyard — a quiet, sun-filled outdoor space designed for relaxing, entertaining, and linking the two buildings. Opposite the entry, the second lean-to will become a covered outdoor kitchen area, giving the courtyard year-round usability and extending the living space outdoors.

One of the key features of the design is the new master suite, located on a mezzanine floor above the former altar. This private area includes a walk-through wardrobe, ensuite, and a bold new circular window — offering views, natural light, and a modern take on the traditional rose window. It’s a space that feels both tucked away and uplifting.

Other parts of the home — including two more bedrooms, bathrooms, laundry, and a second living area — are laid out to make the most of the existing structure, keeping the plan practical and simple while allowing the original volume to shine.

This project is about finding the balance between old and new. It’s not about overcomplicating or over-designing — it’s about working with what’s already there and bringing it back to life with care, creativity, and a sense of purpose. Just like the neighbouring hall conversion, this home is set to become a new part of the story — full of character, warmth, and fresh energy.
